SYDNEY, April 23 AAP - Main stories in today's World Today program:
* Prime Minister John Howard is attempting to pitch himself as a leader with his eye
on the future, as he makes the first in a series of speeches called Australia Rising in
Brisbane today. However, opinions polls show the opposition leading a two-party preferred
vote.
* Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has upset uranium miners in his state, and says
he will continue the no new mines policy in his state. Summit Resources, an Australian
mining company which owna uranium deposit at Mount Isa, has encouraged shareholders to
allow a takeover by Paladin Resources.
* A former judge from the International Court of Justice, Christopher Weeramantry,
is in Australia to launch a new international campaign against nuclear weapons. Weeramantry
says Australian must carefully consider the possibility of selling its uranium to countries
like India which is not a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
