QLD:Driving more dangerous than mining

Seven hundred delegates will take part in Australia's biggest conference on mining
health and safety in Queensland today, discussing safety improvements in the booming industry.

driversafety.com.au managing director RUSSELL WHITE says delegates need to remember
it's not just safety inside the workplace that can be improved, with the drive home from
work usually the most dangerous part of the day for miners.

The conference in Townsville runs until Wednesday covering various safety topics for
the industry.

QLD: Rush thinks of execution "every second of the day"

Eds: Embargoed to 0001 AEDT Tuesday, February 19

BRISBANE, Feb 19 AAP - Bali Nine death row inmate Scott Rush says the thought of being
executed weighs on his mind every second of the day.

In an exclusive interview with SBS TV's Cutting Edge program to air tonight, the 21-year-old
also says he was motivated by money and the chance to have "a bit of an adventure".

Scott Rush is one of six Bali Nine members facing execution for drug offences in Indonesia.

In October 2007, he and fellow Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, along
with two Indonesian death row convicts, had their challenge to the death penalty dismissed
by Indonesia's Constitutional Court.

The Australians' last avenue of appeal is a Supreme Court review of the sentences,
while the prime minister could also make a plea to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono for clemency.

Rush tells SBS there were a number of factors behind his actions.

"I didn't have a concrete job at the time, I was waiting to go to the air force. I
mean, I think about this and sometimes the answer changes in my own head."

He had never been overseas and was not carrying a passport when he landed in Bali.

"I mean, everyone likes a bit of adventure now and then," he said.

But he said he was reluctant to go to Bali.

"Quite honestly I didn't want to come because I didn't feel comfortable.

"I didn't know what I was risking, I didn't know there was a death penalty, I didn't
know anything about Bali really."

He now regrets the pain he caused his family.

"They had a lot of, I don't know, expectance for me I guess, I mean I do feel bad."

He said the thought of execution weighed heavily.

"It weighs on my mind pretty much every second of the day.

"I mean I can't have a normal conversation like I used to be able to because of this.

"It's always in my mind. Always in the back of my head or it stops sometimes at the front."

But he remained hopeful of being released.

"I feel that I will. I mean if I've got any sort of instinct, obviously I'm hoping that I will."

VIC:Woman dies after being hit by train

MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP - A woman has died after being hit by a train while walking across
railway tracks at a busy suburban Melbourne station.

The woman was crossing the tracks at Bentleigh Railway Station in Melbourne's southeast
when she was hit by a city-bound express train, police said.

Initial reports indicated the warning lights at the crossing were operating at the
time, police said.

There were reports that the woman, aged in her 60s, was with her husband at the time.

Initial reports suggested it was an accident, a police spokeswoman earlier said.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said paramedics arrived within four minutes
of the incident, which occurred at 8.45am (AEDT) on Thursday, and confirmed the woman
had died.

No one else was injured.

The Centre Road level crossing has claimed a life before.

Fifteen-year-old Alana Nobbs died when she was struck by a city-bound express train
at Bentleigh station in November 2004.

She was one of three people killed on the crossing in six years.

Alana's father campaigned for the crossing to be upgraded, calling for an underground
station to be built instead.

The crossing was upgraded after Alana's death.

A 2006 inquest into her death heard she had been walking to meet friends on the station
platform before school when she pushed through a pedestrian safety barrier at the level
crossing and was struck by a train.

Greens candidate SAM BYRNE has congratulated Labor for holding on to the Sydney seat

Fed: High security couldn't save underworld kingpin

Fed: High security couldn't save underworld kingpin

By Catherine Best

MELBOURNE, April 19 AAP - Carl Williams had it coming for a long time.

The gangland kingpin was always destined for a grisly end, but it wasn't expected to
come within Her Majesty's penitentiary.

On the inside, the 39-year-old was one of Victoria's most protected inmates. Locked
in isolation at Barwon Prison's maximum security Acacia unit, he had limited access outside
his cell to mingle with other prisoners and few visitors.

When you are one of Melbourne's most notorious underworld figures you command a level
of security beyond that of the average criminal.

But it wasn't enough to save him. At about 1pm (AEST) on Monday, Williams' brutal past
came back to haunt him.

He was attacked in an exercise yard, suffered serious head injuries and went into cardiac
arrest, unable to be revived.

There were plenty who wanted him dead.

Williams' rap sheet reads like the script of a Godfather spin-off. A puppeteer in Melbourne's
drug wars, he was serving a life sentence for ordering the murders of three underworld
rivals and the failed conspiracy to murder another person.

The crime boss was already serving time for a fifth murder when he was sentenced to
a non-parole period of 35 years.

Detectives suspect he was responsible for up to 10 executions.

Williams was one of the central figures in Melbourne's bloody underworld war which
claimed 27 victims between 1998 and 2006.

But he was never the trigger-man. Instead, he paid hitmen to commit the murderous deeds.

They were actions of cowardice, said to sentencing Judge Betty King, who condemned
Williams' infamy, which was further fuelled by the hit Underbelly television series.

"I have a concern that some younger members of the community who are involved in petty
crime may be looking to you as some sort of hero," Justice King said at his 2007 sentencing.

"You are not. You are a killer, and a cowardly one who employed others to do the actual
killing, whilst you hid behind carefully constructed alibis.

"You were indeed the puppet master, deciding and controlling whether people lived or died."

Williams received a life term for murdering gangland patriarch Lewis Moran, his son
Jason Moran and another underworld figure, Mark Mallia.

He was already serving 21 years for the 2003 murder of drug dealer Michael Marshall.

A high school dropout, Williams was a labourer and one-time semi-professional gambler
before embarking on a life of crime.

He notched up his first conviction in 1990 for possessing stolen goods, before serving
six months for attempting to traffic amphetamines in 2004.

But it was a drug feud with the notorious Moran brothers in October 1999, when Williams
took a bullet to the stomach, that set him on a path that would see blood spilt.

Close associates said getting revenge on the Moran family became Williams' obsession,
resulting in a tit-for-tat battle for control of Melbourne's drug trade.

"Since being shot in the stomach, Carl became obsessive about the Moran family," a
former Williams associate, turned informer, known as Mr X, told police.

"Whenever he was drunk and the conversation came up he would start saying things like:
`I want every one of them dead and every one of their crew dead'."

The first Moran to fall was Mark.

In June 2000, the 36-year-old was shot dead outside his Essendon home while sitting
in his car. Williams was charged with his murder in February 2005 but the charge was later
withdrawn when he pleaded guilty to other murders.

Mr X alleged Williams wanted Jason Moran killed on the anniversary of his stepbrother's
death and a plan was hatched to stake out Mark Moran's grave in the hope Jason would visit
to pay his respects.

When that did not work out, Mr X said, it was decided to kill Jason Moran at the sports
oval he visited most Saturdays to watch his children play football in Essendon.

Moran, 36, and his bodyguard Pasquale Barbaro, 40, were shot dead while sitting in
a van packed with 10 children, including Jason Moran's six-year-old twins.

Just over a year later, Jason Moran's father Lewis, 58, was the victim of another bold
daylight murder when he was shot in front of patrons of his local watering hole.

This murder came only a day after the funeral of Carl Williams' close friend and bodyguard
Andrew Veniamin.

Former boxer Mick Gatto was acquitted of Veniamin's murder on the grounds of self defence.

Justice King said Williams had shown no remorse for the killings and had no psychological
disorder that contributed to his crimes.

In a rare move, the media was permitted to photograph Williams in the dock of the Supreme
Court on the day he was sentenced.

The chubby felon - who referred to himself as "The Premier" because he "ran the state"

- grinned for the cameras, apparently basking in the notoriety of his crimes.

Justice King later remarked "it was apparent that you were enjoying the game of being famous".

Before Williams became "famous" he lived with his parents for the better part of his
life in Broadmeadows, until marrying Roberta in 2001. The pair, since divorced, has one
child, Dhakota, aged nine.

Williams' father George is a convicted drug trafficker and his mother Barbara died
of an apparent overdose in November 2008. His elder brother died of medical complications
in 1997 at the age of 31.

Even in jail, Williams could not escape the media spotlight. On the day of his death,
the killer stared from the front page of Melbourne's tabloid newspaper over a story about
a police deal that has taxpayers footing the bill for his daughter's private school education.

In death, the underworld warlord will, no doubt, continue to grab headlines.

NSW: Passengers from America scrutinised by quarantine officers

SYDNEY, April 28 AAP - Passengers on board a flight carrying at least one person from
Mexico have been heavily scrutinised by quarantine officers before disembarking at Sydney
Airport in the wake of the swine flu outbreak.

Several flights from the Americas have arrived in Sydney and five people with suspected
swine flu are being tested in NSW.

Passengers said there was no panic on board a Qantas flight, code-shared with Mexicana
Airlines, from Los Angeles which arrived about 8.45am (AEST) on Tuesday.

"They were saying there were some special quarantine checks they were going to do and
a quarantine officer came and checked the whole flight," Beulah Benedict, 40, told AAP.

"They didn't say anything particular about swine flu, just not to worry too much and
they'll do a special check on everyone and that's all they said."

Her husband, Peter Benedict, said a quarantine officer singled out a passenger at the
rear of the plane who appeared to be a Mexican national.

"The quarantine official was walking up and down the aisle and the guy was sitting
at the very end and we heard a beep and then he was questioning and checking and then
later we heard he was from Mexico," Mr Benedict said.

He said the official was carrying an electronic instrument, notebook and writing paper.

No one on board the flight or in Sydney quarantine was wearing a mask.

SA: Work to start on new hospital later this year

ADELAIDE, April 9 AAP - The South Australian government will begin cleaning up the
site of Adelaide's new $1.7 billion hospital later this year after releasing a master
plan for the project today.

The Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Hospital is due to open in 2016 and will be built on disused
rail yards in the city centre.

Premier Mike Rann said work to clean up the site would begin later this year, including
the removal of contaminated soil.

Health Minister John Hill said the Marjorie Jackson-Nelson would be the most technologically
advanced hospital in Australia.

"We will design and build this hospital with the comfort and ease of patients in mind
and with guidance and input from clinical staff, to ensure it is practical and functional
for their use as well," he said.

The release of the master plan triggers a five-week public consultation period with
the government encouraging feedback on the hospital's design.

Mr Hill said the government would also consult with clinicians and he reaffirmed the
government's view that a new hospital was a better option than upgrading the existing
Royal Adelaide Hospital.

"We will be replacing the ageing rabbit warren that is the Royal Adelaide with a brand
new, custom designed and built, state-of-the-art facility," he said.

"This is what South Australians deserve for their health needs now and into the future."

But the Liberal opposition said the government should seek a mandate for the hospital
at the next state election in 2010.

Opposition Leader Martin Hamilton-Smith said the government should not make any financial
commitments to the project until the people have had their say.

Qld: ABC faces potential litigation from breast cancer sufferers

By Christine Flatley and Rosemary Desmond

BRISBANE, Dec 21 AAP - The ABC is facing possible legal action from women who have
contracted breast cancer while working at the broadcaster's Brisbane studios.

An independent study has found that women who worked at the Toowong studios in the
city's inner-west reported breast cancer at a rate of up to 11 times higher than the general
working community.

The shock findings forced ABC managing director Mark Scott to order the immediate closure
of the studios, even though the cause of the unusually high incidence of cancer remains
a mystery.

"Given the uncertainty of not knowing what has caused it, the only alternative was
to move quickly to relocate the site," Mr Scott said today.

He rejected suggestions staff should have been moved sooner, saying it would not have
been appropriate to act before the study was completed.

The 350 staff employed at ABC in Brisbane will temporarily use the studios of the Seven
Network and Network Ten until suitable accommodation can be found.

In the meantime, the ABC will commission a study of the incidence of breast cancer
among staff at other sites around Australia in an effort to find out the cause of the
cancer cluster at Toowong.

ABC journalist Ian Eckersley said he had been notified that women were already starting
to pursue avenues for compensation.

"I know the women are talking about it," Mr Eckersley said.

"I know there's one staff member, or ex-staff member, who's been investigating that
pretty thoroughly and it wouldn't surprise me if there's a class action out of this."

Mr Eckersley was one of three staff members who worked alongside the panel of scientists
commissioned by the ABC in July to investigate the high incidence of cancer.

Twelve women who worked at the Toowong office have been diagnosed with breast cancer
in the past 11 years.

Eight of the women worked in the newsroom and most had been there for more than five years.

The study confirmed the higher than usual levels of incidence, and concluded that long-term
employees were most at risk.

However there is still no conclusive evidence about what has caused the cancer cluster,
and Dr Bruce Armstrong, who headed the study, said it was unlikely they would ever know.

"I think the history of investigations of clusters like this tells us that (the likelihood)
is pretty low ... most of the time an explanation is not found," Dr Armstrong said.

"This is an unusual cluster and on that basis it ought to be obvious what the cause
is, but it's not obvious what the cause is."

Mr Scott said there should only be minor disruptions to Queensland news bulletins.

The swift action to abandon the site has been welcomed by staff members.

However, Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) state secretary David Waters
said the Queensland management's response to staff concerns was unacceptable.

"ABC Queensland's management's handling of this matter ... could be characterised as
at times tokenistic, at times dismissive, but overwhelmingly, inadequate," he said.

Staff now fear there may be more incidents of breast cancer as yet undiscovered.

"There could be a lag factor for women working here ... we hope to God that's not the
case," Mr Eckersley said.

"We hope we've had the last case of breast cancer amongst ABC staff but there's no
certainty of that."

ABC staff will be given free mammograms and counselling during the relocation process.

Meanwhile, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie says the state government will help the
ABC find a new Brisbane site.

Fiber optic cable in live gas lines? (Top Stories).

Sempra Fiber Links (SFL) is solving the last-mile broadband problem via natural gas pipelines. On May 8, SFL will insert one mile of fiber optic cable into Oncor's natural gas distribution lines, providing previously unavailable broadband Internet access to businesses in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

More than 90 percent of US businesses still lack broadband Internet access. This is due in part to the difficulty involved in the installation of last-mile fiber optic cable. SFL is the only company to perfect a technology that allows fiber to go into functioning natural gas pipelines. SFL's "Fiber-in-Gas" process incorporates patent-pending fittings that allow the insertion and extraction of a conduit through active natural gas pipelines. The process is safer, faster, cheaper and less disruptive than the traditional method of digging up city streets to lay fiber-optic cable. The end user gets broadband, the gas utility makes $400-per-pipe-mile in revenue and the ISP gets past the last mile.

SFL's "Fiber-in-Gas" technology is the first to be demonstrated in Gas Technology Institute's (GTI) Global Technology Transfer Alliance, a group focused on innovative natural gas-related technologies throughout the world. Oncor, TXU's energy delivery business, will deliver the broadband Internet access to the Dallas/Fort Worth area via its natural gas distribution system.

Fiber optics is a new play for Sempra Energy, an $8 billion company with 9 million customers and 12,000 employees (just last quarter, the company reported 2001 earnings of $518 million). More details on Sempra Fiber Links can be found at http:www.semprafiberlinks.com.
